UNIJOS STUDENTS DONATE OVER 600 BOOKS TO THE LIBRARY

Friday 9th December, 2016 was a great day in the Library as students of University of Jos surprised us with the single largest
donation of books.

The students during the launch of a project "I TESTIFY TO REFILLING UJ's BOOKSHELVES" which was in solidarity of the "Operation Beauty from Ashes" project that was launched by the Library Management to raise support to rebuilding the Library, raised over 600 books from friends and associates, to organizations outside the university.

The event which took place at the Open Air Theatre of the University of Jos, Bauchi Road campus, was occasioned by a play "Late Pam" and music by the group, showed the students were passionate about the cause and expressed optimism about the prospect of rebuilding  and upholding the legacy of the library.

The play which bothered around societal values like helping the needy, and encouraging the youth to abstain from social vices like drinking harmful substances and armed robbery. it also touched on the topic of unionism, politics and even the issue of the penalty of homosexuality. it was very captivating and interesting to say the least.

According to the coordinator of the students Mr Akolo James Anthony, he said that when the library
was on fire, he already had a vision of refilling the shelves and even after the fire was subdued and nothing was salvaged, he didn't loose hope. "We have had an amazing response from our student adviser, he has been a wonderful father and a friend" he said; "we also have established great partnership with our local community (University community), notable organization like Hillcrest International school, Global Scholars in USA etc. We have over 600 books here and we promise to do more to refill our shelves".

The student adviser in the person of Prof. Danny McCain congratulated the students on a job well done and prayed other students to also do their best to come up with initiative that will help in raising support for the Library.

Also speaking the Dean of Faculty of Arts, University of Jos, appreciated the students for this wonderful initiative and hoped that more students will come up with plans to help in refilling the  bookshelves that were lost in the inferno.

The representative of the University Librarian(who was unavoidably absent) and the Head, Subject Libraries Mrs. Taiwo D. Oluwatomisin while receiving the books was overwhelmed with joy. She congratulated the students for having a vision and following it up with action. she enjoined them to be pacesetters where ever the find themselves.

Among the staff present were The Dean and some staff of faculty of Veterinary Medicine, staff of faculty of Arts and some Library staff.

In a related development,  Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero also brought a truck load of books to support “Operation Beauty from Ashes", they were received by the Head, Education Library and coordinator Library and Information Sciences Dr. G.G. Gupiyem on behalf of the University Librarian.
